The Change Background is a free browser tool that removes and replaces the background on a photo without uploading it anywhere. The segmentation model runs on your own device, so there is no account, no credit meter and no watermark, and every export comes out at the original resolution. It takes one image or a whole queue of them, and it can leave the background transparent or put a colour, a gradient, a blur or another photo behind the subject.

Every image exports at full resolution with no account, no watermark and no credit meter. Serving inference costs money per image, which is why hosted tools have to ration you; running it in your browser costs us nothing per image, so there is nothing to ration. No. Segmentation, compositing and encoding all happen in your browser tab. Open your browser’s network panel while you process an image — after the one-time model download, there are no requests at all. That is also why the editor keeps working with your network disconnected.

You open the image in a tool that runs a segmentation model over it, and the subject is separated from everything behind it without you selecting anything by hand. Here that starts the moment a file lands: the cutout appears in a second or two, with no lasso, magic wand or manual masking involved. On a clear subject the automatic pass is the whole job. Where it struggles — hair against a busy backdrop, fur, glass — the refine brush corrects the edge rather than making you start over.

Drop a photo into the editor, wait a second or two for the automatic cutout, then pick what goes behind the subject: nothing (a transparent PNG), a solid colour, a gradient, a blurred copy of the original scene, or an image of your own. Adjust the edge if it needs it and download. The step-by-step guide covers each control in more detail.

Remove the background, set the fill to “None”, and export as PNG or WebP — those two carry an alpha channel, so the transparency survives the download. The checkerboard you see behind the subject in the editor is the transparent area. Do not use JPG for this: the format has no alpha at all, so a transparent background silently flattens to white. If the cutout is going into another design, a full-resolution PNG is the safest handoff.

Drop it in and the model cuts the subject out exactly as it would from any other background — there is no colour-key or magic wand step, and you never have to click the white. A plain white studio background is close to the easiest case there is, so the automatic result is usually final. The one thing to watch is a white or very pale subject against white, where the edge can go soft; raising cutout sensitivity and then shrinking the matte a step or two clears the grey fringe that gets left behind.

The easiest tools are the ones with nothing to install: a browser editor like this one, or the subject-lift already built into iOS Photos and macOS Preview. Photoshop and Affinity Photo give you the most control in exchange for the most work, and Canva is straightforward but wants an account and a paid plan. What sets this apart from the other browser options is that nothing is metered — full resolution, unlimited images, a batch queue that downloads as one ZIP, no sign-up — because the model runs on your device instead of on someone’s server.

Mostly it is not. The Fast model is 4.4 MB and loads before you can drop a file, so the first cutout is near-immediate. A larger 42 MB model downloads quietly behind it and takes over for better edges — you can switch between the two in the editor at any time. After that both are cached, and every subsequent image skips the upload and the download round trip, so batches are usually faster here than on a hosted service.

Those remain the hard cases for every model, hosted or local. When the automatic mask misses, the refine brush lets you paint the edge back in — included rather than sold as an add-on, because we assume you will need it.

Not one we impose. The practical ceiling is your device’s memory, since the full image is held in a canvas. Very large files process more slowly on phones than on laptops, but they are never silently downscaled.
